The two sealing surfaces of the bolt press each other against the flange gasket to form a seal, but this also damages the seal. In order to maintain the seal, a huge bolt effect force needs to be maintained, and for this, the bolt needs to be made larger. A larger bolt needs to mate with a larger nut, which means a larger diameter bolt is needed to allow for the tightening of the nut.
